The information in this program is based on guidelines from major health organizations, a review of the literature, research conducted by our group, surveys, and needs assessments that we have conducted from patient and health care professionals, and 15 years of experience prescribing exercise to people following stroke at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute/University Health Network. These guidelines should be used with caution and should be applied appropriately to the circumstances of the individual, in consultation with a health care worker and family, carers, or guardian.
It is important to exercise judgment to determine the risks to the individual involved. Some recommendations may be suitable for participants overall, but inappropriate for an individual with a specific additional health condition. Many people following stroke are at risk for falls and should therefore choose appropriate activity such as seated exercises.
